Maybe this school's computer science program should give the admissions department some pointers.
Carnegie Mellon University mistakenly told 800 students they'd been admitted to its computer science master's program, before withdrawing the acceptance letters and blaming it on a tech glitch.
The red-faced Pittsburgh campus apologized for Monday's dream-crushing error.
"We understand the disappointment created by this mistake, and deeply apologize to the applicants for this miscommunication," school spokesman Ken Walters said.
"We are currently reviewing our notification process to help ensure this does not happen in the future."
The error was first reported by Gawker, which got a hold of the errant email.
"You are one of the select few, less than 9 percent of the more than 1,200 applicants, that we are inviting," it said. "Welcome to Carnegie Mellon!"
It took seven hours for Carnegie Mellon to go back on that acceptance note.
"CORRECTION OF PRIOR EMAIL / REVOCATION OF OFFER OF ADMISSION TO MS IN CS PROGRAM."
Adding insult to injury, Carnegie Mellon told the applicants to "please acknowledge receipt of this retraction."
The snafu sent applicants like Ben Leibowitz on an emotional roller coaster. The Stamford, Conn., student called friends and family with the good news and went out to celebration dinner with his parents.
"It was brutal. I didn't get much sleep last night," Leibowitz said. "Now I have to clean up the mess. I'm calling all my relatives, I'm going, 'I'm sorry it's not happening.' "
Carnegie Mellon has one of the nation's top computer science grad schools. It tied for No. 1 in that category with academic heavyweights MIT, Stanford and UC Berkeley in the most recent U.S. News & World Report's rankings.
