More than 500 couples spent Valentine's Day in line for the most unusual of sweetheart deals: a vacant lot in Newark.
In a radical move to attract young homeowners and their tax dollars, while simultaneously ridding itself of acres of overgrown eyesores, the hardscrabble city sold 100 tracts for exactly $1,000 each on Saturday.
Couples queued outside City Hall for hours in the cold to stake their claims.
Early-bird Brazilians Ana Rezende, 43, and Rafael Cura, 36, were first in line — arriving Friday night, 16 hours before the fire sale began. The married couple, who've been living in the Brick City for 10 years, plucked a 25- by 100-foot lot a mile from City Hall.
Excited, they took their two children right away to see the makeshift parking lot they will one day call home.
Under the deal, the first 100 couples in line were able to buy a lot for $500 down, with the $500 balance due at closing.
They have to adhere to strict rules: present architectural plans for a house and close within 90 days, build the home within 18 months and live in it for at least five years.

If they don't comply, couples lose their deposits and their slice of the American Dream, said Deputy Mayor Baye Adofo-Wilson, who planned the initiative.
For couples slow to finish the building, the city will deal on a case-by-case basis with homes not finished on time, Adofo-Wilson said.
When built, the lots are expected to bring in hundreds of thousands in tax revenue to the crime-ridden city, which is desperate for the revitalizing effect of fresh, young working families.
"So many people have been interested in this . . . we may have to do it again," said Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.
