PORT ST. LUCIE — Michael Cuddyer won't lobby the front office for a reunion with a Rockies teammate, but dropped a hint Monday that Troy Tulowitzki makes sense for the Mets.
"I think he could be a fit here for sure – there is absolutely no question in my mind that he could be a fit here," Cuddyer said. "Whether or not [the Rockies] eventually trade him, I don't know. Nobody in baseball has a player like Tulo except for the Colorado Rockies, so in my opinion you never let a guy like that go."
The Rockies and Mets briefly discussed Tulowitzki in the offseason, but talks never gained traction. Last summer before the trade deadline, the Rockies sent a group of evaluators to Triple-A Las Vegas to watch Noah Syndergaard pitch. The Mets' top prospect almost certainly would be needed in any deal to acquire the All-Star shortstop, who is still owed $118 million and is coming off significant hip surgery.
The Mets are set to begin the season with largely untested Wilmer Flores at shortstop. There is some thought the Rockies might actively look to deal Tulowitzki once he proves the hip is healthy.
"[Tulowitzki] is a great player, and he's tenacious out there in the field," Cuddyer said. "He has no interest in anything but winning. I think that type of player and attitude is a fit everywhere, not just here, but I don't know if that will ever come to fruition, because I don't know if the Rockies will ever trade him. If I was the Rockies, I never would."
Cuddyer said he didn't pay much attention to the Tulowitzki trade talk over the winter.
"I don't tend to caught up too much in the rumors," Cuddyer said. "I read them. I enjoy them, because I'm a fan first, but I don't put too much weight to rumors until it actually happens."
