65 years ago (tomorrow), Disney released its classic animated fairy tale film, Cinderella, and since then, boys and girls all over the world have fallen in love with a sweet, dirty girl who is inexplicably friends with the vermin who overrun her home. I kid. We've all fallen in love with the wonder and the majesty of the Cinderella myth.
It's a simple story that can trace its roots to almost every culture: a kind girl (or boy) is lowered in life and is abused by the powers that be. Through magic (or luck), she or he gets a chance to shine, be loved, or be appreciated in a new way. The "Cinderella" character is elevated. There's usually a ball, and horrible mentors, and a love story, and by the end, our leading lady (or man), is finally given a happily ever after.
The idea, of course, is that the character's inherent goodness is what earns him or her this change in station. It's a morality tale full of magic and romance designed to give the downtrodden hope for a better future.
The story is still as relevant today as it was 65 years ago. Disney is revamping the classic tale into a live action film next month and just this Christmas, Anna Kendrick played a warped version of the heroine in a big screen adaptation of Into The Woods.
