Having the training to sustain an accent over the course of a series has done wonders for the careers of actors like Hugh Laurie and Ruth Wilson, who fooled a lot of people into thinking they were American when they starred on "House" and "The Affair," respectively. (Both are English).
But sometimes a TV character's accent falls flat.
We asked dialect coach Patricia Fletcher — who has worked in television and theater and with actors such as James Spader and Brian Dennehy — to lend a professional ear to some of the actors who aren't quite doing it for us in the accent department.
Yael Stone
The character: Lorna Morello on "Orange Is the New Black"
The accent: Boston
Like Brooklyn's, the Boston accent has to be one of the toughest. Perhaps the directors of this broadly played Netflix prison dramedy have instructed Stone to lay it on with a trowel, but it has always struck our ears as much too much.
Fletcher says: "Technically, the dialect work is inconsistent, and a bit of the actress' native Australian dialect infiltrates. For example, the brightness and nasality of the vowel sound in the word 'card' speaks of the Australian pronunciation. Also, sinking the cheeks or rounding the lips a bit in words like 'not' and 'Robert' gives the Australian pronunciation rather than the American 'naht' and 'Rahbert.'
"I could see how someone who knows the specifics of accents and dialects might be disturbed, but the public adores this character's accent."
The verdict: Thumbs down
Amy Carlson and Donnie Wahlberg
The characters: Linda and Danny Reagan on "Blue Bloods"
The accents: Brooklyn
The CBS series is all about the Reagans, a dynasty of Irish New York cops fighting with each other and then fighting together. Two of the Reagan kids, played by Bridget Moynahan and Will Estes, don't sound like they grew up in Brooklyn.
But middle child Danny, played by Boston-born Wahlberg, and his wife, Linda (played by Illinois native Carlson), make an attempt to sound local. Still…
Fletcher says: "I felt that both actors were quite believable and in the range of possible New York accents. Amy Carlson loses a bit of R-coloring on her vowels. There is also some nasality to the vowel sound before the consonants M and N, as in the words 'Danny' and 'slam.' But I thought her gestures and physical approach fit that of a blue-collar New Yorker.
"I also buy the speech of Donnie Wahlberg's character. Certain New York and Boston dialects very much overlap in their sound adjustments. In some scenes, I did not detect the intrusion of any telltale Boston sound adjustments into the New York dialect.
"If we want to complain about the New York dialects, we really should be critiquing co-stars Tom Selleck and Len Cariou."
The verdict: Thumbs up
Scott Bakula
The character: Dwayne Pride on "NCIS: New Orleans"
The accent: New Orleans
The CBS show is a runaway success on Tuesday nights, and the versatile Bakula, as Big Easy native Dwayne, began the season with a thick Cajun accent that came and went. He seems now to have left it behind entirely.
Fletcher says: "Though admittedly there are hundreds of New Orleans dialects, I did not detect the presence of any Jefferson Parish 'natives' among the stars of 'NCIS.' Scott Bakula does not seem to be adjusting his speech for this role. [Bakula is from St. Louis.]
"One could certainly justify being stationed in New Orleans and not having a specific New Orleans sound, as this is a Naval Criminal Investigative Service — employing agents who have served and traveled the world. But apparently the character description states that Pride was born and raised in Jefferson Parish."
The verdict: Thumbs down
