Kevin Garnett made his triumphant return to the Timberwolves on Wednesday night, starting at power forward in a 97-77 win over the Wizards in Minneapolis.
It had been more than seven years since his trade to Boston, after he played in Minnesota for the first 12 years of his Hall of Fame-bound career. Garnett, 38, was traded from the Nets at last week's trade deadline after agreeing to waive his no-trade clause for the homecoming. Garnett finished with five points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes.
"I've been back before, and I never paid attention to how much love is here for me still because I'm too busy being focused on the game," Garnett said. "And tonight it was just over the top.
"I did not know the city missed me like this. … But to see it is reality, and I'm very appreciative."
Garnett was introduced last, with a lengthy video tribute playing before his name was announced to a thunderous ovation from the sellout crowd. Garnett sat on the bench with his head down the entire time, but popped up as his name was announced.
"I looked into the crowd and saw my friends and family," Garnett said. "I'm glad my daughters were here to see that. It was just a special time. I can't even put it into words."
Garnett's Timberwolves teammates were floating on the energy created by his reception.
"That game was a tribute to the great Kevin Garnett," said Kevin Martin, who scored 28 points. "He helped us get through the nerves in the first quarter and we took off from there."
Ricky Rubio said: "I was jealous about this crowd. I want this crowd every day. "
In New Orleans, Thaddeus Young, who was traded from the Timberwolves in exchange for Garnett, finished with 19 points in the Nets' loss to the Pelicans, one more than Garnett scored in any of the 102 combined regular and postseason games he played for Brooklyn over the past year-and-a-half.
