Netflix added a third woman to its board on Monday, naming former Disney TV chief Anne Sweeney as a new director.
Sweeney joining the now nine-person board is significant given Disney's close ties to rival Apple — which is holding talks with programmers to try to create a new virtual cable company to stream traditional TV channels.
Sweeney has a wealth of knowledge of Disney's TV and digital operations both at home and overseas.
Netflix is the midst of global expansion and is facing increased competition in the streaming video field from services such as HBO Now — launching next month.
HBO Now is a broadband-only product.
The Sweeney board appointment comes as Silicon Valley start-ups have been embarrassed in recent reports by their lack of women in both top positions and on board directorships.
The problem was highlighted in the past few weeks as accusations of sexism at venture capital giant Kleiner Perkins by employee Ellen Pao were played out during a weeks-long trial.
Pao's claims were dismissed and she lost the case.
The new position is Sweeney's first since the executive said a year ago she wanted to exit as chief of Disney's co-chairman of Disney Media networks in order to pursue a career directing TV shows.
Sweeney stepped down in January.
She joins Ann Mather, a former CFO at Disney-owned animation studio Pixar, and Leslie Kilgore, Netflix's former chief marketing officer, on the board of the Los Gatos, Calif., company.
Netflix is also tapping Brad Smith, Microsoft's General Counsel bringing the total number of board members to nine.
"We look forward to benefitting from Brad and Anne's perspective as we continue to build our global Internet TV network," said Reed Hastings, Netflix co-founder and chief executive.
