How Do I Turn On Closed Captions On Netflix? A Step-By-Step Guide For Every System

Have you ever been totally engulfed in a gripping episode of Breaking Mad or Mad Men on Netflix, when your roommates burst through the door like bulls in a China shop? Or have you recently expanded your international horizons as a consumer and are currently obsessed with Peaky Blinders and other British television series? Don't feel bad: Cillian Murphy's brogue mixed with English countryside dialect is super hard to hear sometimes! That's what closed captions are for, and they're super helpful and easy to use. Here's how to turn them on for every major device and console.

1

Amazon Fire TV

Once playback has started, press Menu on your remote and select "Turn Captions On." Once captions are turned on, you can change the size and color of the text by navigating left or right on the track pad. Press Menu one more time to exit and resume playing.

2

Apple TV

First, make sure you have Version 5.0 or higher. Before you select an episode or movie to watch, Apple TV gives you the option on the left hand side to choose your subtitles options before pressing play. But what if you start playing and realize you can't understand or hear what anyone is saying? Then, just hold down the center button on your Apple remote until it gives you the option to select closed captions and subtitle preferences. Select away and you're good to continue streaming.

3

Google Chromecast

During playback, tap anywhere on the screen to bring up the options bar. Select the Dialogue bubble, and there you have it.

4

Mac and PC

Once the player has started, hover your mouse over the screen and choose the click on the dialogue bubble to turn subtitles on and off and control language settings.

5

iPad, iPhone, iPod, and NOOK

During playback, tap anywhere on the screen to bring up the options bar and select the Dialogue bubble.

6

Playstation 3 and Playstation 4

Once the player has started, press down on your analog stick so an options bar pops up on the bottom of your screen. Scroll over to the Dialogue bubble and press "X." Voila!

7

Roku

There are one of two ways to control subtitles on a Roku. On the description page of a movie or show, select Audio and Subtitles before playing. If you've already started playing, press down on your Roku remote and select Audio and Subtitles from there.

8

XBOX 360 and XBOX One

Once the player has started, press down on your analog stick so an options bar pops up on the bottom of your screen. Scroll over to the dialogue bubble and press "A." Voila!

9

Wii and Wii U

For Wii, simply select the Dialogue bubble on the right side of the screen to select your options. Click play on your remote to continue playing. For Wii U, do the same exact thing, but just press "X" once you've selected to resume playing.
