PORT SAINT LUCIE – The Mets announced the worst-case scenario for Josh Edgin Sunday morning. They're still waiting for news on Zack Wheeler, but they're already planning for a negative outcome.
Edgin, the Mets' only established left-handed reliever, will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery — most likely on Tuesday, Edgin said. Team medical director David Altchek will perform the procedure at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, and both Edgin and Mets general manager Sandy Alderson expressed hope that Edgin, 28, could be ready for the start of the 2016 season.
Wheeler, whom the Mets scratched from his start Saturday due to right elbow soreness, underwent an MRI Saturday, and the Mets don't yet have the result, Alderson said. In the meantime, the GM acknowledged that sixth starter Dillon Gee — who had been pitching out of the bullpen — will start a game for the Mets on Thursday. The team will split its squad that day, with a home game against the Astros and a road game at the Cardinals, so Wheeler theoretically could still start on his turn.
Yet in the wake of Mets manager Terry Collins saying Saturday that Wheeler had undergone two MRIs on the elbow since last season concluded, Alderson acknowledged that Wheeler flew to New York "at one point" during the offseason for a test because his right elbow barked when he tried to throw. The other test might have occurred in an exit physical, Alderson said, although he stressed that he wasn't certain.
Asked whether he's concerned about Wheeler, Alderson responded, "I try not to get concerned, because there's a certain inevitability to, either it is or it isn't (bad). So I just allow events to unfold, keeping in mind what the alternatives might be."
As for Edgin, the Mets diagnosed him last week with a stretched ligament in his left elbow, and noted orthopedist James Andrews affirmed the Mets' findings on Saturday, at which point Edgin made the decision to get the surgery rather than try to pitch through the condition. The doctors described the ligament as unstable, Edgin said, and tests also revealed a bone chip in the elbow.
His decision, Edgin said, was guided by "My future in baseball and my family."
The internal alternatives to Edgin — Dario Alvarez, Rule 5 selection Sean Gilmartin, Jack Leathersich and Scott Rice — all have underwhelmed this spring. The trade market also appears pretty sparse.
"We'll continue to look at all options," Alderson said. "We know what we have internally at this point and hope that those possibilities, those options, improve over the next couple of weeks, become more attractive. And we'll look outside."
