NYPD computers have been used to make changes to online encyclopedia Wikipedia's pages describing cases of alleged police brutality, it was reported on Friday.
The alterations to the free-access site were tracked to the NYPD through Internet Protocol addresses, which can be publicly tracked by using various websites.
"The matter is under internal review," Detective Cheryl Crispin, an NYPD spokeswoman, told Capital New York.
Computers on the department's network at 1 Police Plaza were used to edit and try and delete Wikipedia entries for well-known victims of police altercations – such as Eric Garner, Sean Bell and Amadou Diallo, the report said.
The department's addresses also have been used to edit sections on stop-and-frisk policies.
The news site identified 85 NYPD IP addresses that were used to edit Wikipedia.
More than 15,000 addresses are registered to the department, about a dozen of which were linked to considerable Wikipedia activity, Capital reported.
A person on the NYPD network made several changes in Wikipedia on Dec. 3 – shortly after a Staten Island grand jury declined to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo in the chokehold death of Eric Garner.
Among the changes, Capital reported:
- "Garner raised both his arms in the air" was altered to: "Garner flailed his arms about as he spoke."
- "[P]ush Garner's face into the sidewalk" was altered to: "push Garner's head down into the sidewalk."
- "Use of the chokehold has been prohibited" was alteredd to "Use of the chokehold is legal, but has been prohibited."
Wikipedia allows anyone to edit entries – either with a Wikipedia account or anonymously. When making changes anonymously, Wikipedia logs the user's IP address and creates a publicly available record of the edits.
