In Iranian director Asghar Farhadi's "About Elly," a group of Tehran yuppies goes on a beach holiday, kids in tow. The beautiful, rather spoiled Sepideh (Golshifteh Farahani) has persuaded the children's teacher Elly (Taraneh Alidoosti) to join the party, with an eye toward setting up Elly with just-divorced Ahmad (Shahab Hosseini). The laughter and flirtation halts when Elly disappears soon after they settle in.
The movie was released in 2009, but rights issues held up its US debut. This superb ensemble drama, nearly the equal of Farhadi's Oscar-winning "A Separation," must be seen, but with as little prior knowledge as possible. Farhadi and his editor Hayedeh Safiyari are masters of withholding information until the suspense becomes almost unbearable.
"About Elly" shows that the ethical dilemmas of ordinary adults can, with this level of talent, become as gripping as any thriller.
