Firefighters tend to the victims of today's blaze.
A raging fire caused terror in a Bronx apartment building this morning, trapping residents and injuring 26 people, authorities and witnesses said.
The three-alarm blaze began about 7:40 a.m. in a fifth-floor apartment of a large Melrose building on East 149th Street near Grand Concourse, according to an FDNY spokesman.
Samantha Covel, 43, who lives in an apartment with three young children, said the heat woke her up. She woke up everybody up, and they ran to a neighbor's apartment, where they called 911.
Resident James Smith, who lives on the 21st floor, said he saw a father dangling his baby outside the window of a smoke-filled apartment, then went back into the apartment.
A child and four other people were seriously hurt and will be treated in hyperbaric chambers at Jacobi Hospital, according to an FDNY spokesman.
Five firefighters were injured, and two are being treated for smoke inhalation.
Millie Rodriguez, 42, said he watched firefighters trying to resuscitate a man and woman on stretchers. She said they were "black with soot, their clothes, faces, hands and feet," and added that they were barefoot.
It was not immediately clear what sparked the fire.
There are almost 500 apartments in the building, along with more than 20 stores.
