Kidnapping victim Jaycee Dugard says Ohio girls 'need the opportunity to heal'

As the public reacts to the stunning news of the discovery of three missing women in Ohio, former abduction victim Jaycee Dugard has a message for America.

Dugard, who spent 18 years being held captive by Philip and Nancy Garrido after being kidnapped in 1991, says the three women found yesterday in an Ohio home need time to recover and reassimiliate into society.

"These individuals need the opportunity to heal and connect back into the world. This isn't who they are. It is only what happened to them," Dugard told People Magazine in a statement. "The human spirit is incredibly resilient. More then ever this reaffirms we should never give up hope."

Authorities discovered Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight in a home near Cleveland on Monday. It is believed that a 6-year-old girl who was found with the victims Berry's daughter, officials in Ohio said today. Dugard has two children that were fathered by Garrido while she was held captive.
