Candidates for Comptroller: Scott Stringer (L) and Eliot Spitzer.
The gloves were off in a vicious debate this morning between former Gov. Eliot Spitzer and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer as they duke it out to become the city's next comptroller.
Spitzer – who re-emerged after resigning the governor's chair in 2008, amid a humiliating hooker scandal – sought to paint Stringer as an ineffective career politician who is unqualified to be comptroller.
Stringer threw everything he had at the smooth-talking Spitzer, saying he engaged in "illegal, illicit activity" during his tenure as governor and, before that, state attorney general.
"My opponent still doesn't get it. He didn't take responsibility he evaded it. What he did was resign because there was a federal investigation coming his way," Stringer said.
When Spitzer boasted that he took on Wall Street as attorney general and fought political establishments when he was in office, Stringer replied: "You broke your own eggs because you engaged in illegal, illicit activity."
It was one of the nastiest digs of the 60-minute debate hosted by ABC and streamed live online. It also marked a change in the campaign strategy for Stringer, who had initially said he would not bring up Spitzer's prostitution scandal on the trail.
Spitzer argued he signed state budgets that had positive impacts on New York families while Stringer, as a state assemblyman in the "dysfunctional" legislature for years, voted for late and ineffective spending plans.
Stringer also lay Mayor Bloomberg's unpopular third term at Stringer's feet because the BP never opposed the Council's move to extend term limits in 2008.
"Mr. Stringer participated in subverting democracy and giving him a third term," Spitzer said. "Mr. Stringer was there to go along to get along to give a third term."
He also accused Stringer of shady behavior to get potential opponents out of the Democratic primary for comptroller.
"You cleared the field through backroom deals," Spitzer shot at him.
Stringer also emphasized "Troopergate," in which Spitzer was accused of using state resources to spy on his political nemesis, then state Senate Pres. Joe Bruno, a Republican.
"If you look at Troopergate and the other ways you tried to spy on your colleagues this is … troubling," Stringer said.
Spitzer shrugged off the incident, saying his administration merely responded to a reporter's request for information on Bruno.
The two tussled over campaign finance, with Stringer slamming Spitzer for refusing to participate in the city's campaign finance system, which limits spending.
Spitzer said when labor union's mega-donations to Stringer are taken into account they will have ended up spending the same amount.
