Nor’easter set to slam New York on busiest travel day of year

A Nor'easter – dubbed Winter Storm Boreas by the Weather Channel – is bearing down on the New York metropolitan area just in time for one of the busiest travel days of the year – the day before Thanksgivng.

The storm – packing wind gusts of more than 40 mph along with heavy, driving rain – is expected to smack the region late Tuesday.

By early Wednesday morning, wind-driven rain will be pounding the area as millions of travellers hit the road or catch a flight for Thanksgiving and Hanukkah get-togethers.

"The rain will generally amount to two to four inches, which could lead to flash flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas," senior meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said on AccuWeather.com

"Even where flooding does not ensue, the soaking rain threatens to severely snarl Thanksgiving travel for those both on the ground and in the air."

Robert Sinclair, a spokesman for AAA in New York, told The Post Monday the wind and rain could make Wednesday – the busiest traffic day of the holiday season – a brutal day on the roads.

"In New York state we're anticipating 2.6 million people will be travelling, 90 percent of them by motor vehicle, so the weather will make road travel difficult to say the least," he said.

If possible, Sinclair advised, people should try to get out of town Tuesday, before the storm hits.

"If they have that flexibility, that's a good idea," he added.

Luckily, there is only a slight chance of snow in the forecast for New York City and coastal New Jersey and Connecticut as the rain tapers off late Wednesday or early Thursday, with temperatures remaining well above freezing.

Those inland or further north, however, could see a light dusting.

But the thermometer will plunge once the storm pushes through, with a new front of frosty air blowing in from the northwest, sending temperatures to 30 or below on Thanksgiving day.

The approaching storm is the same one that brought a wintry mess to Oklahoma City and Dallas during the weekend.
