Vegan book author Rynn Berry collapsed in Prospect Park during a New Years Eve jog and went unidentified for over a week in the hospital before he passed away Thursday, a friend said.
The 68-year-old vegetarian historian and health nut died at 12:30 p.m. after he suffered from cardiac arrest during an afternoon run on Dec. 31 and was rushed to New York Methodist Hospital, longtime friend and fellow writer Martin Rowe said.
The author, who was without identification when he collapsed, went unidentified for eight days until his half-brother Charles recognized him from a graphic picture that was circulating online showing Berry in his hospital bed with tubes down his throat.
"When I saw him in the hospital I immediately recognized him," Rowe said. But when a jogging group emailed him the picture he didn't know who it was.
"I went to the hospital to see if there was anything I or the very concerned vegetarian community could do, but unfortunately we could not," Rowe said.
Berry wrote several books on vegan and vegetarianism including The Vegan Guide to New York City which was his most popular, and lectured internationally on the history of vegetarianism, the friend said.
"This is what he dedicated his life to, vegetarianism and veganism."
Berry peddled copies of his books at the Union Square Greenmarket on the weekends for twenty years and distributed his books by carting them around to book stores and restaurants, said Rowe.
"He was a very popular and singular personality in the New York City Vegetarian scene," Rowe said.
"We are all very shocked."
Berry passed away in the company of family two days after his half-brother was able to identify him.
