PORT ST. LUCIE — For Opening Day, the Mets are headed toward Plan Gee.
With Jon Niese off schedule because of recent elbow soreness, manager Terry Collins has penciled in Dillon Gee as his starting pitcher for Opening Day, a team source confirmed Thursday.
Gee is scheduled to pitch an exhibition game against the Twins on Friday and then would make an additional Grapefruit League start five days later, putting him in line for March 31 against the Nationals at Citi Field.
"I haven't been told officially, but if it's me, I'm ready to go," Gee said. "It's humbling they would trust me with that day. It's a big honor if I get it, but it's one day out of 162. That's the whole season. But it definitely would be cool to pitch on that day."
Niese, who underwent an MRI exam on his elbow earlier this week that showed no structural damage, is expected to throw a bullpen session Monday and begin the year on the disabled list, but still could be in position to pitch for the Mets in the first week of the season.
Ike Davis was in the starting lineup at first base against the Braves on Thursday, marking his return to Grapefruit League action after missing nearly three weeks with calf soreness.
Lucas Duda (hamstring) is expected to be at first base tomorrow, after playing in a minor league game Thursday.
Collins had Juan Lagares batting ninth, behind pitcher Zack Wheeler. The manager has indicated he may bat the pitcher eighth occasionally this season, believing it can lengthen the lineup after the first time through the order.
