Carlos Beltran's right elbow won't be fully healed without surgery, but the Yankees are hoping it's good enough to help them right now.
After three rehab games in extended spring training in Tampa, Beltran was activated from the disabled list and returned to a battered Yankees lineup for Thursday's game against the A's.
"I took the same swing I normally would take in a game," Beltran said of his at-bats in Tampa. "I didn't feel [anything]."
But that hardly means his elbow is 100 percent.
"When they were trying to do the treatments to try to get me to all the range of motion, sometimes I feel something there, but it's not pain," said Beltran, who was not tested by any checked or missed swings. "It's nothing compared to what I felt when it happened. It's better."
Beltran, the Yankees' regular right fielder, will be used only as a DH for the time being. He hasn't even thrown a ball since the injury.
Joe Girardi, who has a question mark at first base with Mark Teixeira's damaged right wrist, is counting on Beltran to be able to contribute.
"We feel that he's healthy," Girardi said. "He feels good. That's why we brought him back. We wouldn't have brought him back if we thought he was half the player he was as an offensive player."
The manager acknowledged he's more concerned with winning now than he is about looking ahead.
"I think in this business… you have to think long-term, but also have to think on a daily basis," Girardi said. "And I'm not worried about tomorrow. I'm worried about today's game and that's what I'll focus on. Long-term, you give a guy off here and there, but day-to-day, you have to worry about the game today."
Beltran eventually will need surgery, but would like to wait until after the season. The operation requires an 8-12 week recovery process.
Scott Sizemore was designated for assignment to make room for Beltran.
"This is something I'll have to take treatment for … maybe for the rest of the season," Beltran said. "I have an issue there. … There's a loose piece there. We're hoping that this thing doesn't come back and I'm allowed to play the season and hopefully finish the season and address that at the end of the year."
If he has another setback, Beltran is unsure whether he'd be able to have another cortisone shot, because he had two within a short period last month.
"Everyone has to be responsible," Beltran said. "I hope I can help the lineup, make it better. We can score runs. I know right now we're going through a tough stretch, but it's a long season. I know every game counts and all that, but right now, it just feels like this team is gonna hit."
