It wasn't until 2012 that Diane Lovejoy realized just how negatively much of the public perceived women with cats.
Lovejoy, the proud owner of 10 felines, had just published her first book, "Cat Lady Chronicles." She arrived at a breakfast meeting in Houston to speak to a group of businesswomen and was greeted with surprise.
"I walked into the grand ballroom where they had their meetings and a woman asked, 'Can I help you?'" Lovejoy, 58, recalls. "When I told her I was the speaker, she looked at me, head-to-toe, and said, 'Oh, we did not know what to expect.'"
The group was likely expecting someone who personified the crazy cat lady stereotype — a kooky, lonely woman who dresses frumpily and relates better to her cats than she does people.
Despite her large feline family, that's not Lovejoy. She's a married, fashion-loving former New Yorker who now lives in Houston, where she works as the publications director for the city's Museum of Fine Arts.
After that awkward breakfast meeting, she decided to try and rehabilitate the image of the cat lady.
Her new book, "Cat Lady Chic," features more than 80 photos of iconic women — from classic beauties such as Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren to modern femmes fatales Lana Del Rey and Keira Knightley. Lovejoy hopes the collection of photos will show the world that women who love cats aren't necessarily dowdy spinsters.
"Why would some of Hollywood's best photographers purposefully pose these legends with cats if the cat lady is supposed to be so unattractive?" Lovejoy asks.
She says the tide is already turning when it comes to how the public perceives cat ladies.
"With people like Taylor Swift walking their cats in the streets of New York, I think the perception has already changed considerably for really young people," she says. "Cats are having a moment, and it's here to stay."
But the fact that much of the world seems to be "crazy" for cats — or at least amusing GIFs of them — poses some competition for books sales.
"It's hard to go up against Grumpy Cat on Amazon," Lovejoy says with a laugh. "I had to manage my expectations."
