Michael Jackson’s history of criminally bad duets

For all the magic that Michael Jackson produced as a solo artist, his track record as a duetting artist is pretty poor — and it wasn't helped last week by the newly unveiled Freddie Mercury collaboration "There Must Be More to Life Than This." The sappy ballad, originating from a demo dating to the 1980s, was finished off by the remaining members of Queen and producer William Orbit.

Sure, Michael's duet with sister Janet on 1995's "Scream" had some bite, but his solo career was peppered with bad collaborations. Here are six of the worst.

"The Girl Is Mine" (Paul McCartney, 1982)

Jackson and McCartney managed to bring out the worst in each other, starting with this soft-rock dud. The section in which they try to try to talk smack is particularly unbearable.

"Say Say Say" (Paul McCartney, 1983)

The match made in hell continued when Jacko duetted with Macca for this spineless piece of R&B.

"Just Good Friends" (Stevie Wonder, 1987)

It should have been a titanic meeting of talent. At best, it was passable.

"Whatzupwitu" (Eddie Murphy, 1993)

Murphy has made embarrassing films ("Norbit," anyone?), but this track ranks above any movie calamity.

"Why" (3T, 1996)

3T comprises Tito Jackson's sons and a bunch of drippy harmonizing. Uncle Michael also lent a hand on this nauseating ballad — and made them sound even worse by asking, "Why does Monday come before Tuesday?"

"Love Never Felt So Good" (Justin Timberlake, 2014)

The raid of Jackson's archival material began this year with the album "Xscape," offering spruced-up versions of tracks the singer had shelved. This lightweight disco "collaboration" was the first single, but Jackson can't take any blame: After all, he didn't know anything about it.
