While Saturday Night Live has always been a launch pad for new and exciting talent, the great majority of former cast members have stuck to what they know best: comedy, especially of the physical and broad variety. But every now and then, former SNL cast members will stretch their acting talents and take on a more serious role. Here are ten movies in which SNL alumni broke out of their comfort zones, retaining their funny side while delivering rich and nuanced performances.

Boasting rare dramatic performances from two SNL alumni, Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig, The Skeleton Twins stars the former cast members as twin siblings who, after cheating death on the same day, reunite after years of estrangement to figure out how their lives turned out to be so disappointing. 'Driving Miss Daisy' (1989)

While the Best Picture-winning film version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play is best known for its lead actors (Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman), Driving Miss Daisy also introduced a new side of original SNL cast member Dan Aykroyd: the serious actor. Aykroyd even nabbed his own Oscar nomination for his role. [GoWatchIt]

Many people forget that Robert Downey, Jr. had a brief stint as an SNL cast member — he joined the cast in 1985, alongside Anthony Michael Hall and Joan Cusack. Now he's one of the biggest movie stars in the world, but his early film roles weren't as flashy. He earned his first Oscar nomination for playing the famed Charlie Chaplin in Richard Attenborough's biopic about the silent film star. [GoWatchIt]

'Lost in Translation' (2003)

Sofia Coppola's film earned Bill Murray his first Oscar nomination for his portrayal of an aging actor traveling alone for work in Tokyo. He strikes up a friendship with another American, a young woman played by Scarlett Johansson, and the two develop a connection that temporarily alleviates the alienation they both experiences as outsiders in a foreign city. 'Nebraska' (2013)

Will Forte stars as the beleaguered son to Bruce Dern's restless and cantankerous octogenarian in Alexander Payne's sweet and subtle comedy Nebraska, in which the two protagonists travel across the heartland on a fool's errand to collect a sweepstakes prize. Forte should have earned an Oscar nomination for his role, which, while rooted in humor, was a much softer and subdued performance than the wackiness we're used to seeing him project. [GoWatchIt]

'Enough Said' (2013)

Julia Louis-Dreyfuss starred in Nicole Holofcener's darling romantic comedy as a masseuse whose love interest turns out to be the ex-husband of one of her clients (played by Holofcener regular Catherine Keener). Going head-to-head against James Gandolfini, Louis-Dreyfuss gives a subtle performance as a single mom that is totally unlike the brash and loud characters she has played on television. [GoWatchIt]

'Brokeback Mountain' (2005)

Joining Robert Downey, Jr. in the 1985 season of SNL, Randy Quaid was notable for having already received an Oscar nomination for The Last Detail (and for co-starring in National Lampoon's Vacation). Decades later, Quaid delivered an atypical performance as the man who brought our two favorite gay cowboys together on that mountain. Stoic and understated, it's pretty much the opposite of what Quaid usually delivers — but he was totally eclipsed by matinee idol co-stars. [GoWatchIt]

8

'Away We Go' (2009)

Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski star in this Sam Mendes-directed film about a expectant couple who embark on a road trip, visiting family and friends across the country in order to find the best place to raise their child. Again, it's another quirky comedy (this time written by husband and wife Dave Eggers and Vandela Vida), but Rudolph brings a quiet seriousness to her performance. [GoWatchIt]

'Punch-Drunk Love' (2002)

Paul Thomas Anderson nearly made Adam Sandler a respectable actor in the offbeat romance Punch-Drunk Love, which, to be honest, is probably the best movie Sandler ever made. Of course, this was just a small blip on the IMDb page filled with gems like That's My Boy and Grown Ups. [GoWatchIt]

'Year of the Dog' (2007)

Molly Shannon, who made a name for herself on SNL by falling down and flashing her underpants, delivered a surprising performance in this charming and heartbreaking film written and directed by Mike White. Shannon stars as a woman who experiences the immense grief after the death of her beloved pet dog, Pencil, and learns to placate her sadness with animal rights activism. [GoWatchIt]
