The 8 craziest hangover cures from around the globe

There's nothing worse than waking up with a hangover: a throbbing headache, the spins, nausea, grogginess, and a bone-dry tongue.

Simply put, it sucks. Of course, as horrible as a hangover can be, it can be made worse when you wake up in unfamiliar surroundings. No, we're not talking about that kind of a night.

A hangover while traveling just intensifies the misery of it all.

So, we decided to brush up on some international hangover cures (just in case).

But hold on to your stomachs and try them at your own risk — the ones we found mostly sound worse than the ailment itself.

Here are some of craziest hangover cures from around the world.

South Africa

The cure: Sheep's brain

Talk about brain food! Just outside of Johannesburg in Soweto, South Africa, locals dealing with the side effects of intoxication get cerebral (literally!) about finding a cure. Their solution: chowing down on some sheep's brain.

"People swear by it in Soweto. They sell it on the streets. There are stalls and stalls of people selling it. It's crazy," says one traveler who was brave enough to try it. "It wasn't that bad. It's gruesome to look at, but if you close your eyes it doesn't taste too bad."

Not sold on the idea? Consider this: The brain is by far the richest source of certain omega-3 fatty acids, which help with everything from healthier cells to a better mood. So why wouldn't it have the ability to wipe out a hangover?

Vietnam

The cure: Efferalgan codeine, aka Vietnamese Alka-Seltzer

Our ears perked up when Yahoo Travel's Editor in Chief, Paula Froelich, dubbed this "the miracle cure." As a former columnist for the New York Post's Page Six, Froelich made a living reporting on the party and social scene in the Big Apple. As a result, she's tried everything to cure many a hangover.

But it wasn't until a very fun (and long) liquid lunch in Vietnam that she was introduced to these game-changing tablets. The formula of "half ephedrine (to wake you up) and half codeine (to kill the pain)," she says, makes it a gift from the hangover heavens. Now, we just need to figure out how to get some here in the United States.

Italy

The cure: Pizzle

The Italians have always been a ballsy people, in many ways, so we aren't too shocked by their cure of choice: pizzles. No, this isn't a mini pizza. It's dried bull penis. (Take a minute.)

Resembling a Slim Jim, these long, thin strips of dried muscle are high in protein, vitamins, and minerals. Apparently, its chewy texture and meaty flavor are so good, they were requested by Chinese athletes at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing to help increase their stamina.

Hungary

The cure: Brandy infused with sparrow droppings

Maybe it's the fuzzy heads making questionable choices, but Hungarians believe that adding sparrow droppings to brandy will help alleviate a hangover. Of course, those with a clear head know the hair of the dog probably helps more than the poop, plus the droppings can be dangerous because they contain bacteria and possible parasites.

Mongolia

The cure: Tomato juice with pickled sheep eyeballs

In 2012, a Japanese study stated that tomato juice helps the liver purge alcohol from your system. (Americans are no strangers to this — morning-after bloody marys, anyone?) But Mongolians have found a way to make it an even better chaser: throw in two pickled eyeballs! Yeah, you read that right.

It's unclear if the eyeballs offer any nutritional benefit, but that's not even the point. Who's thinking about their headache when they have two beady peepers staring back at them from their tomato juice? It's distracting if nothing else.

Australia and parts of Europe (and now the U.S.!)

The cure: Berocca

Hallelujah! You can now get Berocca in the U.S.Photo: Berocca

These effervescent tablets once brought me back from the brink after an especially brutal night out. The next morning, during a breakfast meeting, my Scottish boss empathized with my pain and slipped me two of these gems. Less than an hour after taking two tablets, I felt like a new, normal person.

Until this year, Berocca was available only in Australia and certain parts of Europe. However, in June, it became available in America — much to the joy of Europeans living in the States. So what is it exactly? Basically, Berocca is a high-dose vitamin B supplement that helps restore levels of the vitamins that are depleted by alcohol.

And parent company Bayer pitches it as an "energy support supplement," it's also a hangover cure I swear by.

South Korea and parts of Europe

The cure: Tripe soup

What's worse, the tripe soup cure or the hangover?Photo: Shutterstock

For centuries, tripe soup has been the go-to cure for Europeans and Koreans. That, in itself, makes us believe there might be some benefit to this one no matter how gross it sounds.

Tripe, aka the digestive tract of pigs or cows, is made into a soup by boiling the innards with garlic, onion, and sometimes cream. Slurping a bowl delivers high levels of essential fatty acids, protein, and salt back to the body, which helps it recover faster and combat dehydration. It is believed that if a person eats some before drinking, it will prevent a hangover.

Philippines

The cure: Fertilized duck embryo

Eggs are high in protein and can help erase the effects overimbibing. But in the Philippines, locals take this to the extreme by eating balut — a poached, fertilized duck embryo — right out of the shell.

The rationale behind this crunchy cure: The eggs contain high levels of cysteine, the substance that breaks down hangover-causing toxins in the liver.
