Atlanta Hawks co-owner Bruce Levenson has agreed to sell his controlling interest in the team after revealing to the NBA he had sent a racist email in 2012, commissioner Adam Silver announced Sunday.
According to a press release from the commissioner's office, Levenson notified the league of the email this July and following an investigation, agreed to divest in a meeting with Silver on Saturday night.
"As Mr. Levenson acknowledged, the views he expressed are entirely unacceptable and are in stark contrast to the core principles of the National Basketball Association," Silver said in the statement. "He shared with me how truly remorseful he is for using those hurtful words and how apologetic he is to the entire NBA family."
Levenson issued a written apology on Sunday morning. He said he sent the "inappropriate and offensive" email in a discussion of how to attract suburban whites to attend Hawks games.
From an excerpt published by ESPN: "My theory is that the black crowd scared away the whites and there are simply not enough affluent black fans to build a signficant [sic] season ticket base. … I have been open with our executive team about these concerns. I have told them I want some white cheerleaders and while i don't care what the color of the artist is, i want the music to be music familiar to a 40 year old white guy if that's our season tixs demo."
On Sunday, Levenson wrote: "I trivialized our fans by making cliched assumptions about their interests (i.e. hip hop vs country, white vs. black cheerleaders, etc.) and stereotyping their perceptions of one another (i.e. white fans might be afraid of our black fans). … If you're angry about what I wrote, you should be."
Donald Sterling was forced to sell the Los Angeles Clippers earlier this year following the release of audio recordings on which he made racist statements.
