ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Team X-Ray took another hit Tuesday when Martin Prado, one of the few productive Yankees, underwent an appendectomy that ended his season.
"He started complaining [Monday] and after the game it got worse,'' general manager Brian Cashman said of Prado, who had two of the Yankees' six hits in a 1-0 loss to the Rays on Monday night at Tropicana Field. "He went to the hospital after the game and had the surgery [Tuesday morning].''
Since being acquired at the July 31 trade deadline from Arizona for catching prospect Peter O'Brien, Prado as arguably been the Yankees' best player. In 37 games, he batted .316 (42-for-133) with seven homers, 16 RBIs and a .877 OPS. In his last 24 games, Prado batted .389 (35-for-90) with six homers and 14 RBIs.
"Injuries are certainly part of it and you deal with it,'' said Cashman, who lost four-fifths of his starting rotation before the All-Star break and watched a lineup shrivel down the stretch and cost the Yankees a postseason spot. "While he was playing he was tough and a gamer and played well for us. Thankfully he is OK.''
Prado had been playing with a bothersome left hamstring recently.
Since Prado, who will be 31 next month and will make $11 million next season, can play second base, third base, right field and left field, Cashman was asked where he fits on the 2015 club.
"That depends on the rest of the roster,'' the GM said. "He has big value is his flexibility and playing multiple positions.''
After not getting anything offensively from Brian Roberts and Stephen Drew at second in the wake of Robinson Cano leaving for Seattle, the Yankees could use Prado's bat at second.
Or Prado could handle third where Chase Headley is a free agent and nobody can predict if Alex Rodriguez's body can handle the stress of playing the position when he is reinstated from suspension.
With Brett Gardner in left field and Jacoby Ellsbury in center, Prado could play right, but if Rodriguez is the DH that means Carlos Beltran will be in right.
