Despite all the speculation that Sony's entertaining a sale, spin-off or joint venture of its entertainment business, Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton told The Post it's not happening.
"Nothing's in the cards," he said after giving an overview of the business at the Goldman Sachs' Communacopia conference in Manhattan on Wednesday.
While Sony chief Kazuo Hirai has rejected calls to sell part of its Sony Pictures Entertainment, he has taken steps to streamline the film unit after it came under fire for poor performance and bloated costs.
Of all sectors he oversees, Lynton seemed most bullish on music.
"The future of music is actually very, very bright right now," he said.
All Sony and the other majors have to do is help strengthen the streaming models offered by YouTube, Pandora, Spotify, Beats and others.
"We really want the subscription model to thrive," he said.
Lynton added that network TV is promising, too, but producers have to know how to play the international market.
Network comedies generally don't travel well, he said. But a good comedy format — produced locally — can replicate its success in market after market.
As for this year's abysmal summer box office, Lynton called it too early to tell.
There hasn't been a good romantic comedy in two years, he offered by way of example. So maybe significant portions of the movie-going public were simply "under-served" this summer.
