AMC's upcoming series "Better Call Saul" has a lot of baggage and a lot of expectations. That's because it's not 100 percent original. It's a prequel to "Breaking Bad," with Bob Odenkirk reprising his role as sleazy strip-mall attorney Saul Goodman.
We learned a bit more about the new show's vibe with the debut of a new music video in the middle of AMC's "Breaking Bad" marathon Sunday night.
With lyrics by creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, and music by "Breaking Bad" composer Dave Porter, the ditty feels like an infomercial for Saul, though it's too deliberately zany and its values too high production for the kind of stuff you see at 3 a.m.
The old Saul Goodman fake commercials were little ambulance-chasing masterpieces.
Performed by Junior Brown on his trademark double-neck lap-steel guitar, the song is pretty much a country-fried twist on the "Ghostbusters" theme. No big revelations, just confirmation that the show will still be set in Albuquerque, with babes, courtroom shenanigans and a cheeseball element. Because, you know, it's Saul.
More interestingly, a shot of Odenkirk in front of a giant billboard reveals Goodman was once an attorney known as James M. McGill. Who you gonna call? (505) 842-5662 — a working number, if you care to spend your minutes. The transition from one identity to the next is sure to be among the major plotlines of the series, which is due to premiere in February.
