Jill Soloway's breathtakingly beautiful new series, Transparent, is about to become Amazon's first big hit. The show's pilot received rave reviews when it debuted last spring, and today you can stream the entire first season on Amazon Prime Instant Video. Get ready to meet and fall in love with the Pfefferman clan — a family that will either be torn apart or brought back to together by the revelation that their father is transgender.
When we last checked in, Maura (Jeffrey Tambor) and Shelly (Judith Light) were getting closer, Ali (Gaby Hoffmann) was mad at Josh (Jay Duplass), Sarah (Amy Landecker) was reconsidering her choice to leave Len, and Ed's life looked to be in peril.
Did Ed Die?
Yes, but it's unclear how. The episode opens with his body being prepared to be buried. The rest of the episode follows the humor and the horror that is Ed's funeral. Maura steals some of the spotlight by arriving to the funeral as herself and Shelly spends the whole day worried about cole slaw and mustard. Each of the Pfefferman children faces their own crisis.
Is Sarah Going To Leave Tammy To Go Back To Len?
It doesn't seem so. Sarah and Len (Rob Huebel) actually have an encounter in the laundry room during Ed's wake and they almost have sex. However, Len reveals that he loves Sarah and doesn't want to be a "secret." Afterwards, Sarah runs into Tammy (Melora Hardin) and announces that she thinks they should get married.
Is It Happily Ever After For Josh & Raquel?
Even though Josh is in love for the very first time in his life, Raquel (Kathryn Hahn) is scared off by Ali's suggestion that Josh is a "love addict." She alludes to the fact that Josh has had many, many lovers and Raquel storms out. Josh intercepts her, but makes things worse by not only declaring his love, but tacitly admitting to his past relationships with Rita and Syd. He blames Rita for scaring Raquel off.
Why Is Rita Even At The Funeral?
Everyone chuckles when they see Rita at the funeral with a 17-year-old boy. It's assumed she has moved on to another young conquest. But, when Josh confronts Rita about Raquel, it's revealed that the boy is Rita and Josh's son. His name is Colton and he grew up in Kansas after being put up for adoption and has tracked Rita down. Colton seems open and eager to love Josh despite Josh's warnings and protestations.
Why Did Ali Tell Raquel About Josh?
Ali is having a rough day. First, she confronted Syd about her relationship with Josh and after Syd revealed that Josh got off on the "love" in her eyes, Ali felt the need to tell the lovesick Raquel that her brother might be trouble. Raquel, in turn, tries to help Ali reconnect with Judaism. Ali asks her mother why she was never Bat Mitzvahed and Shelly reveals that Maura wanted to go to a transvestite retreat that weekend. Ali explodes on Maura, who in turn points out that she's aimless and living off his money. She throws all the money in her wallet in his lap and he sadly asks her if she even likes him. Ali storms off.
Is That How It Ends?
The first season of Transparent ends with Ali rejoining the family. They are picking at the leftover food from the day and Josh enters with Colton. While Josh doesn't have the courage to introduce him as his son, Colton makes himself at home and insists on saying grace. The open-minded Pfeffermans let the cornfed boy lead them in an awkward prayer that praises Jesus Christ.
