Troubled Colts owner Jim Irsay returned last Friday from his six-game suspension for driving under the influence, back after missing his first game in the 30 years the Colts have played in Indianapolis. He spent time in rehab for a prescription pill problem, and steered attention to the future.
"I've really taken it a day at a time, and I've really looked forward to moving forward and doing well," he told the Indianapolis Star.
Yet, as Irsay tries to do that, the past rears its head.
An ESPN The Magazine investigation revealed new connections between Irsay and a woman named Kimberly Wundrum, who died of an overdose March 2 in a home purchased for her by a trust controlled by the Colts — by Irsay, essentially. Nine days after the funeral, Irsay was pulled over in the incident that led to his suspension, found with a laundry bag full of prescription pills and over $29,000 in cash.

Wundrum had several drug arrests and reported drug ties before her death. Her sister Rhonda, who introduced the two when she was Irsay's personal masseuse, described them as "former friends." But Wundrum and Irsay lived together sporadically over the past decade and were known to be in a relationship.
While Irsay was separated from his wife, Meg — they two divorced earlier this year — they kept up appearances in public. Irsay, meanwhile, provided for Wundrum and her stepchildren from a previous marriage, but would keep her at arm's length in public — rarely taking her out.
The home at which Wundrum passed away was the third residence bought for her by Irsay, according to ESPN, a townhouse where she relocated after Irsay moved her out of the house they shared a year ago while she was in rehab. This came as his relationship with another woman, Jami Martin, developed after they met when Martin replied to one of his Colts' Twitter trivia contests in 2011.
Despite some of the ups and downs, Rhonda and Wundrum's children raved about Irsay.

"Everything I know about Jim is good," Rhonda told ESPN in an email. "He has extended generosities and helped countless people … my sister included. I hope you choose to refrain from trying to hurt a truly good man and let my beautiful sister rest in peace."
When Irsay was pulled over, it was near Martin's home, which led her ex-husband Greg to send out a series of tweets accusing Irsay of being a homewrecker.
Irsay stopped seeing Wundrum when he began Martin, though he continued to give Wundrum a $6,000-a-month allowance.
