This won't help cool the simmering feud between Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones.
The two architects of the Cowboys' 1990s dynasty have feuded since the pair won their second Super Bowl in 1993. The major point of contention: Johnson taking too much credit for the personnel moves that shaped the team's roster.
Johnson may have went a step further in his latest salvo. As the lone interview subject in a "30 for 30" short on the Cowboys-Vikings Herschel Walker trade, Johnson suggests Jones originally scoffed at the notion of trading the All-Pro running back for a haul of draft picks.
"When I told Jerry that we were going to trade Herschel Walker he was kind of astonished," Johnson says at the opening of "The Great Trade Robbery."
"He was like, 'Really? You can't get rid of Herschel Walker, we won't score a point. That's what Minnesota thought: This college guy, we'll pull one over on him. We'll give him these five guys and they'll fall in love with them and we won't have to give them anything until the No. 1 pick a couple of years down the road.' That's what they thought."
The key to the October 1989 trade, as Johnson explains, was the conditions applied to the five "role players" the Cowboys acquired from Minnesota. Each player turned into a draft pick if the Cowboys cut him. Johnson promptly cut all five, and those picks helped resurrect the failing franchise, which would go on to win three Super Bowls in four years starting in 1992.
The film paints Johnson as the lone genius behind the moves as Jones balked, the press mocked him and the Vikings celebrated his foolishness.
In a recent ESPN feature on Jones, the Cowboys owner talked about his disdain for Johnson.
"Jimmy came from college and dealt in scholarships," Jones said over the summer.
"This is pro football. You don't separate the money from pro football when you are physically and mentally there and up to your ears in it every day. That's a difference of opinion I have with him. Since I have owned the team — from Day One Jimmy was here — I made or approved of every football decision that required a dollar."
So, chances are Jones won't like this film.
