Jermain Taylor was a most unlikely candidate to fight a middleweight title.
Taylor retired for two years after suffering bleeding in the brain and losing four of five fights from 2007-2009. His comeback seemed to stall when he was charged with two felonies after allegedly shooting and wounding his cousin during an August dispute. But Taylor, now 36, is out of jail on bail.
On Wednesday night, in Biloxi, Miss., he claimed the International Boxing Federation middleweight title with a unanimous decision over Sam Soliman of Australia.
"I heard it before. Now I'm hearing it again," Taylor said of the cheers that accompanied the belt, according to Agence France-Presse.

Soliman is no prize himself. The former dock worker, who is 41 years old, entered with 11 career losses, a recent drug ban and a history of knee problems. He dragged around a bad leg for 12 rounds in losing to Taylor.
"He's a warrior," Taylor said. "He did the same thought I would have. He kept fighting."
Taylor, who improved to 33-4 with one draw and 5-0 in his comeback run, claimed the undisputed middleweight title in 2005 after defeating Bernard Hopkins, but retired in 2009.
Taylor sent Soliman to the canvas in the eighth, ninth and 11th rounds. The fighter best known for knocking off Bernard Hopkins in 2005 improved to 33-4-1 for his career.
