Apple really wants its smartwatch to be on par with a luxury Swiss brand — with the price to match.
CEO Tim Cook said in September the Apple Watch would start at $349 when it goes on sale next year, but he didn't specify what a top-of-the-line gold one would cost.
No wonder. A stainless-steel version will cost $500, while the precious-metal model will set customers back as much as $5,000, iGen.fr reported on Tuesday.
The French Web site, which accurately predicted Apple would sell two iPhone 6 versions, kicked off a new round of speculation about the pricing.
Apple Watch designer Johny Ive hinted at the eye-popping price earlier this year, saying he channeled Switzerland — not Silicon Valley — when it came to the competition.
A Rolex all-gold watch can easily cost upwards of $10,000. Still, plenty of Apple watchers predicted the high-end models would run closer to $1,500.
At the September event, Cook revealed that Apple would sell three watch collections — Sport, Watch and Edition — at different price points.
Within the gold range, users can choose from either a rose gold or a yellow gold, ranging from $4,000 to $5,000, according to iGen.
The report also predicted that Apple would start selling the device in mid-February, despite reports that it wouldn't hit stores until the spring.
