WASHINGTON – It's a summit President Obama wanted to avoid – but at least there will be cocktails.
The president revealed his aversion to Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell – the incoming Senate majority leader who has stifled his agenda — at the 2013 White House Correspondents Association dinner, when he told a searing joke with obvious conviction.
"Some folks still don't think I spend enough time with Congress. 'Why don't you get a drink with Mitch McConnell?' they ask," Obama told the assembled crowd of media and celebs at the annual black tie affair.
"Really? Why don't you get a drink with Mitch McConnell?" he said to laughs and cheers. "I'm sorry. I get frustrated sometimes."
Now, it looks like Obama and McConnell may one day some day get their boozy Happy Hour. Obama did a turnaround Wednesday when asked at a press conference about forming closer bond with McConnell after the GOP's electoral romp.
"Actually I would enjoy having some Kentucky bourbon with Mitch McConnell. I don't know what his preferred drink is," Obama said.
For the record, McConnell's favorite cocktail is a Manhattan – though he demurred when Yahoo News asked him to name his favorite label.
"The best way to drink it, in my opinion, is to make a Manhattan, which is a combination of bourbon and other unknown substances, drop a couple of cherries on top of it, make sure there's ice there, and it's a terrific drink around Christmas time, which I frequently offer to my guests," McConnell said.
Those "unknown substances" are typically vermouth and bitters.
