LeBron, Kobe look uncomfortable dealing with new realities

LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, welcome to your (new) lives.

James is quickly showing games with his reupholstered Cavaliers are not won in headphone commercial montages or Nike-filmed populist daydreams but on hostile road courts such as Portland's Moda Center, where the Trail Blazers pulled away Tuesday night for an easy 101-82 victory.

James scored just 11 points on timid 4-of-12 shooting as the Cavaliers fell to 1-2. He scored two points in the final three quarters and none in the second half. Then he came away preaching patience for his union with Kyrie Irving (3-of-17 shooting), Kevin Love and coach David Blatt to click.

"We have to understand what it takes to win. It's going to be a long process," James said.

"It's like building a car from scratch. I've done that before. I hated the process, it got on my nerves. I sent it back to get repainted 100 times. But once it was completely finished I was excited about it."

There are 79 games remaining, which is a heck of a lot, but something less than 100.

Bryant averaged 21 shots during the Lakers' 0-4 start. Enough of that. The 36-year-old superstar heaved up 37 attempts on Tuesday night, leaving 41 combined for a motley crew of teammates fronted by Carlos Boozer, Jeremy Lin and … (combing through box score) … Wesley Johnson.

Bryant scored 39 points and praised himself afterward for being "aggressive." It didn't matter — the Lakers were edged by the Suns, 112-106, to remain winless going into Sunday's try at home against the Hornets.

An agitated Bryant said he couldn't gauge the mood in the locker room of the franchise-in-flux.

"When I came in here, I kind of blacked the hell out," he said, according to ESPN LA. "I don't know how everybody else was feeling."

But he has enough awareness to urge teammates — especially a certain one-time Knicks phenom — to get on his level.

"I think the most important thing is to understand the relentlessness that you have to play with," Bryant said. "I'll go out there and I'll leave it on the floor, everything, and compete and be relentless and not be fearful of criticism or fearful of not playing well and missing shots.

"And that's the same way I want the guys to play — Jeremy [Lin] in particular. Because he's a really good player, man. And he's just getting used to playing with that [expletive] attitude."
