Chris Christie knows all about outrageous three-lane traffic snarls, so the New Jersey governor should be well prepared for the backlash he's facing for backing the Cowboys over the Giants or Eagles — the two favorite teams of his constituents and the Cowboys' sworn rivals.
Christie, the pivotal figure in the Bridgegate scandal and a long-rumored Republican presidential candidate for 2016, opened himself up to venom with a nationally televised appearance Sunday night in Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' suite at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field.
Christie — who has said his Dallas allegiance transcends politics and dates back to the Roger Staubach days — was seen gleefully high-fiving Jones during the Cowboys' 38-27 victory.
The most scathing assault came from Jim Kenney, a Democratic member of the Philadelphia City Council with an itchy Twitter finger.
Kenney may have been taking his cues from former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell, who ripped Christie's rooting habits in a radio interview last week, according to NJ.com.
"How can a Jersey guy be a Cowboys fan? It's pathetic," Rendell said. "It's legal, but it indicates a basic inferiority complex. If you are a Jerseyite or a Pennsylvanian and you're rooting for the Cowboys, it means you're not secure in yourself and you wanted to root for a team that was a team in your youth that was a constant winner."
Christie has explained how he spurned the Giants with his non-geographic affiliation: "My father was a Giants fan and I used to remember watching him when I was 8, 9 years old, and every Sunday he would watch the Giants and yell at the TV set. I used to think to myself: Why would I want to root for a team that makes you angry?"
