NBA power rankings: Stars, duds and astonishing stats

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 16 Desember 2014 | 23.16

There are so few shopping days left before the NBA Christmas Day extravaganza where 10 teams and thousands of sad-sack arena employees will be working for the glory of TV ratings. And try as we might, we can't find any lords-a-leaping for sale anywhere, in stores or online.

So we'll give a different sort of 12 Days of Christmas countdown.

12: How many times the Knicks have surrendered 100 points. Also, how many games the Knicks have lost surrendering 100 points.

11: The number of triple doubles in the league so far – three of them by Boston's Rajon Rondo.

10: The most individual turnovers in a game this season, done twice: by the Warriors' Stephen Curry and the Lakers' Kobe Bryant.

9: The longest winning streak in the East this season, by Atlanta. Impressive until you consider the Warriors' 16.

8: The number of victories the Sixers are projected to win based on two wins in the first quarter of the season. Yup, that would be the worst ever.

7: How many teams are playing under .400 – not .500, .400 – in the East. With Orlando, Boston, Indiana, Charlotte, Detroit, the Knicks and Philadelphia in the East, no one is ever out of it.

6: The number of head coaches, not including current interim Ty Corbin, the Kings have gone through since not renewing Rick Adelman in 2006. It's also the number of coaches the Nets have used, excluding two-game interim Tom Barrise, since Byron Scott was canned.

5: The number of Western Conference teams (Golden State, Memphis, Houston, Portland, Clippers) currently on pace to win at least 58 games with percentages over .707.

4: The number of 30-point games Marc Gasol has this season, three more than he had in the first six seasons of his career combined.

3: The place currently held on the all-time individual scoring list by Kobe Bryant, who passed Michael Jordan's 32,292 on Sunday.

2: The number of disappointing professional basketball teams in New York City (subject to change with a Nets hot streak).

1: The number of teams that have won 16 consecutive games this season. Hallelujah, Warriors.

This week's Post power rankings:

1. Golden State Warriors (21-2) (Last week: 1)

The Warriors are just the ninth team ever with 21 wins in its first 23 games – also known as a 21-2 start. No opponent has shot 50 percent on them yet.

2. Memphis Grizzlies (19-4) (4)

The Grizzlies came through the week unscathed but needed two overtimes to beat Charlotte and one overtime to beat Philly. Have a potential nightmare schedule ahead: Golden State, at San Antonio, Chicago, at Cleveland. Happy holidays.

3. Houston Rockets (18-5) (5)

James Harden leads the NBA in scoring (26.3), is second among non-point guards in assists (6.7), third among guards in rebounding (6.2). Now Dwight Howard is back. In his first game since Nov. 17, Howard had 26 points and 13 rebounds.

4. Portland Trail Blazers (19-6) (2)

The Blazers had 18 assists against the Spurs on Monday. So? It was the first time all season they did not have 20 or more. They were the first team with 20-plus assists in the first 24 games since Utah in 2007-08. Portland suffered a far bigger setback: center Robin Lopez broke his hand and is out a month.

5. San Antonio Spurs (17-8) (3)

Only Danny Green, Aron Baynes and Boris Diaw have played in all 25 games for the Spurs, who saw Kawhi Leonard barely miss the rare 5-5-5-5-5 stat line against Denver on Sunday. Leonard had 18 points, eight rebounds, six blocks, five steals … and four assists. It has only been done 15 times since 1986.

6. Toronto Raptors (19-6) (6)

Raptors are now starting Landry Fields with Greivis Vasquez back with the second unit. That move came after Toronto surrendered an average of 26.6 points in the first quarter over five games – the last two 30-point sessions — after DeMar DeRozan went down.

7. Los Angeles Clippers (17-7) (7)

Blake Griffin, who stunned Phoenix with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer last week, has seven treys. He had 26 in his first four seasons.

8. Washington Wizards (17-6) (11)

Have won four straight, and ended the Clippers' nine-game win streak. They've tied the 1968-69 team (they went up to 18-6) and the 1974-75 team (19-6) for the best 23-game start in franchise history. They've owned December: 7-1, shooting .488, scoring 106.4 points, opponents scoring 96.5, shooting .420.

9. Dallas Mavericks (17-8) (6)

The best scoring team in the league at 110.0 points is 0-5 against the top six teams in the West (Golden State, Memphis, Houston, Portland, San Antonio).

10. Atlanta Hawks (17-7) (10)

The Hawks, according to all the sites that figure such things out, had the easiest schedule through 23 games. Then began a brutal stretch Monday: 12 winning teams in 14 games. But they started right beating the Bulls.

11. Chicago Bulls (15-9) (12)

Bulls are 11-4 on the road, even with Monday's loss in Atlanta. But they're doing worse medically: Rookie Doug McDermott is out with knee surgery.

12. Oklahoma City Thunder (11-13) (17)

Russell Westbrook returned, the Thunder won. The next game, Kevin Durant returned (OK, they lost). But they haven't lost in six games since. Huge one Thursday: at Golden State.

13. Cleveland Cavaliers (14-9) (8)

The Cavs can look so good one moment, so ordinary the next. Look at Monday's win. They led Charlotte 21-0. Then saw their lead cut to two. According to Elias Sports Bureau, that was the biggest game-opening run since 22-0 by the Trail Blazers in '04.

14. Milwaukee Bucks (13-12) (15)

How in the name of Giannis Antetokounmpo do they do it? Jason Kidd's young energizers have the most productive bench (44.1 ppg) in NBA after Monday's buzzer win at Phoenix. But rookie stud Jabari Parker left with a sprained knee.

15. New Orleans Pelicans (11-12) (16)

The Pelicans have moved into the eighth spot in the West. Don't get too comfy. Here come the Thunder. And Anthony Davis (chest contusion) came out of a win over the Cavs, sat out a loss to the Warriors and is questionable for the Jazz.

16. Miami Heat (11-13) (18)

Gotta love the East: The Heat are seventh – and two games below mediocre. After meeting the Nets in Brooklyn on Tuesday (without Chris Bosh), Miami has seven straight at home.

17. Phoenix Suns (12-14) (13)

Suns are reeling, having lost six straight, including buzzer-beater gut punches on 3-pointers to Clippers and Bucks.

18. Sacramento Kings (11-13) (14)

You're coach Mike Malone. You lose your best player, post-up stud DeMarcus Cousins, to viral meningitis for nine games. So of course, you get fired for not playing faster like the owner's kid's youth team.

19. Brooklyn Nets (10-12) (20)

Brook Lopez (back) will be re-evaluated Saturday. Nets are now a top 10 defensive team, yielding 98.3 ppg. Unfortunately they're a bottom 10 offensive team, scoring 96.4. Their 41.2 opponents field-goal percentage in December is second only to OKC.

20. Orlando Magic (10-17) (21)

Tobias Harris ended the Hawks' nine-game win streak with buzzer-beater. That was the second time this season he did so, third time with the Magic. No other Magic player had more than one in last 10 years.

21. Denver Nuggets (10-14) (19)

These guys virtually live on Freud's couch. They had stretches this season during which they've lost six in a row, won five in a row, won two, lost six of seven. You're more than welcome to try to figure them out.

22. Los Angeles Lakers (5-16) (24)

Nobody cares about a bench resurgent Carlos Boozer or the Lakers' 3-game winning streak that ended in Indiana. Kobe passed Michael, OK?

23. Boston Celtics (8-14) (22)

Celtics fans have every right to be excited about the offense (104.2 per). They have every right to demand refunds over the defense (106.5). Only Minnesota and the Lakers are worse.

24. Indiana Pacers (8-17) (23)

Rodney Stuckey had two points-rebounds double-doubles in seven seasons. He added two more Saturday and Monday. That win over Lakers stopped an eight-game slide, first ever for Indy under Frank Vogel.

25. Utah Jazz (6-18) (25)

The Jazz are 1-11 in their last dozen games, and the only win came against the defending champ Spurs. Go figure. No, Stockton and Malone didn't unretired.

26. Charlotte Hornets (6-18) (26)

In a rematch Monday of playoff BFFs, LeBron James scored 27 points, Lance Stephenson scored eight. Yeah, Lance is available.

27. Detroit Pistons (5-20) (30)

You get up, go to work, pay your taxes … figure you live in a sane world. Then Detroit beats Phoenix and Sacramento on the road. Normalcy returns in a wipeout at the Clippers, but still, your very faith in a serene natural order is shattered.

28. New York Knicks (5-21) (27)

Fans fear they'll win the draft lottery and draft Emeka Okafor, instead of Jahlil. The Knicks now face Dallas, Chicago on the road, Phoenix, Toronto on the road, Washington on Christmas and then a road trip to Sacramento, Portland and the Clippers.

29. Minnesota Timberwolves (5-18) (28)

T-Wolves can say they were there when Kobe passed Michael Jordan. They can also say they were there when like 28 other teams passed them in the standings.

30. Philadelphia 76ers (2-22) (29)

The Sixers are 0-13 at home. Relax, they are a robust 2-9 on the road. Only Dallas in 1993-94 started worse at home: 0-19.
