To back Margaret Lyons' point back in October: Jane the Virgin might be the best new show of the fall. After giving mediocre sitcoms like A to Z, Manhattan Love Story, and about a dozen others a shot before they were inevitably (and rightfully) cancelled, Jane was truly a breath of fresh air for critics and audiences alike.

Even stacked against the vets, both comedic and dramatic, it's not too outlandish to say Jane the Virgin has had one of the strongest seasons of the fall. How did this tiny CW telenovela rise to the top of the primetime food chain? Two reasons: it didn't take itself too seriously, and Gina Rodriguez is brilliant (and her Golden Globe nomination backs that up). And last night's mid-season finale left us with a perfect cliff-hanger and full of nothing any of the show's fans might expect.

If you're just getting into the show, the premise seems like nothing short of ridiculous. Jane (Rodriguez), a 23-year-old grad student and virgin, is accidentally artificially inseminated with the sperm of Rafael (Justin Baldoni), the sexy owner of the hotel where Jane works. But Jane's boyfriend, Michael (Brett Dier), would prefer if she didn't have another man's baby, being that they're planning their wedding and all. And oh, Jane's father has been M.I.A. her whole life because her mom never told him she was pregnant, but, as it turns out, he's the star of Jane's favorite telenovela and has tracked her down so they can make up for lost time. Phew!

On paper, a premise like this seems, well, ridiculous to say the least. Not to mention most of the show is in Spanish and is narrated by someone with no relation to Jane or her family at all. It reads like something that could immediately flop with primetime audiences, many of which have never seen a telenovela outside of The Soup's "Clippos Magnificos." But each episode was stronger than the last, all leading up to this shocking ninth episode involving evil Petra's (Rafael's soon-to-be-ex) past and fake identity. Though certain plot twists and love interests could have been predicted throughout the duration of the season, they were still welcome and, like this most recent one, spun in a way we couldn't have thought up if we tried.

Though the show's plot would seem to cut itself short after just a season or two, if we learned anything from these first nine episodes it's that this little series should keep surprising us. Be sure to catch up on CW TV and Hulu Plus before the second half of the season kicks in on Monday, January 19th.
