WASHINGTON – President Obama says the hacking of Sony's corporate emails wasn't an "act of war" – but was "cyber vandalism" that demands a response from the US.
"No, I don't think it was an act of war. I think it was an act of cyber vandalism that was very costly, very expensive," Obama told CNN's "State of the Union."
"We take it very seriously. We will respond proportionately," Obama added. He hasn't explained how or when that might occur, but has said that will come at a time of the US's choosing.
Obama gave the interview following a Friday press conference where he came down on Sony execs for nixing the planned Christmas release of "The Interview," a Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy that depicts and assassination attempt against North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Obama called the decision a "mistake."
The FBI released a public statement Friday officially blaming the reclusive North Korean regime for being behind the attack, citing clues buried within the hackers' code and other factors.
Sony responded Friday that it had only canceled the movie after theater owners said they wouldn't show the film, after threats of violence by the group claiming to have done the hack, "Guardians of Peace."
Obama responded to that pushback in his CNN interview.
"Well, look, I was pretty sympathetic to the fact that they've got business considerations they've got to make. And, you know, had they talked to me directly about this decision, I might have called the movie theater chains and distributors and asked them what that story was," he said.
Obama continued: "But what I was laying out was a principle that I think this country has to abide by. We believe in free speech. We believe in the right of artistic expression and things that powers that be might not like."
"And if we set a precedent in which a dictator in another country can disrupt, through cyber, you know, a company's distribution chain or its products and, as a consequence, we start censoring ourselves, that's a problem."
US options to hit back at the repressive, nuclear-armed North Korean regime. It is already facing a host of US and international sanctions.
"But in the meantime, when there's a breach, we have to go after the wrongdoer. We can't start changing how we operate."
He called on Congress to pass cyber security legislation and for corporations to harden their defenses.
"But in the meantime, when there's a breach, we have to go after the wrongdoer. We can't start changing how we operate," he said.
