Sheik Man Haron Monis, the self-styled preacher identified as the gunman in the Sydney hostage siege, is an alleged sex predator who pleaded guilty to writing letters to the families of dead Australian soldiers in which he called them "murderers," according to media reports.
Monis, who was born in Iran as Manteghi Bourjerdi, moved to Australia in 1996, according to 9News in Australia.
In 2013 he was sentenced to community service for sending the letters, in which he also referred to the servicemen as child killers, ABC News reported.
Monis was also accused of dozens of cases of sexual assault while he was a "spiritual healer," Australian media said.
He is on bail after being charged with being an accessory to the murder of his former wife and mother of his two children.

Monis operates a pro-Islam website, YouTube channel, and Facebook and Twitter pages in which he says the allegations against him are "political cases against this Muslim activist, not real criminal cases."
Monis is "not a member of any organization or party" but he "supports his Muslim brothers [and] sisters… [and] he promotes peace," the website says.
"Islam is the religion of peace, that's why Muslims fight against the terrorism of America and its allies," he wrote on Twitter recently.
His Facebook page, which was shut down during the siege, had 14,725 "likes" when it was removed from the site, The Age newspaper reported.
His website included gruesome pictures of murdered children and lashed out against what he called "Australian oppression and terrorism."
