The NBA is expected to postpone Monday night's game between the Knicks and Kings at the Garden because of a potential historic snowstorm heading to the New York region that will likely shut down some public transportation.
Kings television broadcaster Grant Napear tweeted the Kings were informed the game had been scuttled. The Knicks were still awaiting official word from the NBA, which said it is "monitoring the weather all morning."
The Kings arrived in town Sunday night, but the club was threatened with being stranded after the contest if they stayed in New York.
It would be the 15th postponement of a game in Knicks history — the previous one was 2012's scheduled season opener at Barclays Center in Brooklyn because of Hurricane Sandy. The prior cancellation occurred because of falling debris from the Garden's ceiling in before a 2011 home game against the Magic.
The last snow postponement occurred in 2000 when the club took a train to Washington DC — only to turn back upon arrival. Two weeks earlier, the Knicks' game at Charlotte was postponed due to the tragic car-crash death of Hornets small forward Bobby Phills. The Knicks were in town and attended the funeral service.
On Nov. 22, 1963, the Knicks also had a game postponed in the aftermath of President Kennedy's assassination.
All 14 previous postponed games eventually were made up. No makeup date for the Kings contest had been booked.
Neither the Knicks or Sacramento are in the playoff race. The Knicks have the league's worst record by percentage points at 8-37, though they have won three of their last four. The Knicks are to resume their schedule Wednesday against the Thunder at the Garden, weather permitting.
