‘Selma’ director’s perfect response to Oscar ‘snub’

"Selma" director Ava DuVernay had a perfect response to her purported "Oscar snub" when she elegantly glossed over the Academy Awards at Essence Magazine's Black Women In Hollywood luncheon.

Speaking in front of a star-studded crowd at the Beverly Wilshire that included host Oprah Winfrey, Lupita Nyong'o, Alfie Woodard, Angela Bassett and the cast of "Orange Is The New Black," DuVernay said, "This is probably the best event. I have been in a lot of fancy rooms this awards season, the White House, the Golden Globes, all these fancy things — there's something happening on Sunday — but this is my favorite."

DuVernay, who presented the Visionary Award to costume designer Ruth E. Carter whose impressive career includes costumes for "Malcolm X" and "Selma," had previously said she wasn't upset by not being nominated in the director category, but, " I was more bothered by David not being nominated," referring to David Oyelowo, who starred as Martin Luther King Jr. The film is nominated for Best Song and Best Picture.

Oyelowo — who agreed with many of the guests that "this is one of the best events by far" — talked of the need for more positive roles in Hollywood, telling a story about how his son assumed he would be next playing a supporting role, even after he led "Selma."

He said, "I explained the plot to him and he turned to me and said, 'Oh, so Daddy, are you going to play the best friend?' I said, 'I just played Dr. King! Best friend? " He added, "The point is … images matter…The images my 13-year-old son has been seeing are speaking to him."

Presenting the Breakout Actress Award to "Belle" and "Beyond The Lights" star, British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw, he said, "So, I just really want to thank you Gugu because I have a 3-year-old daughter and images are going to affect her. You are presenting her with images that I love."

Nyong'o introduced the African-American cast members of "Orange is the New Black," saying, "I am a die hard, true-blue, stay up until midnight for the next season to drop … fan," and handed them the Black Women In Hollywood Vanguard award.

Actress Danielle Brooks spoke for the group, which included Laverne Cox, Adrienne C. Moore, Lorraine Toussaint, Samira Wiley, Uzo Aduba and Vicky Jeudy, saying, "It's really challenging being a 'blacktress,' there's not many roles for us most of the time, you are too big, you are too small, your hair is too curly, you're too fat, not woman enough … The one thing that I feel like I've learned by being on 'Orange,' is that we are enough, just the way that we are … We hope that we continue to inspire people to bring to life all that we are, all of the essence of who we are."

Regina King was honored with the Fierce & Fearless Award following a video tribute from stars including Chris Rock, who joked, "I worked with Regina on this movie 'Down To Earth' [in 2001], back when white men were president." He added, "In a room full of actors, nobody is going to say 'I am better than Regina.'"

King, whose 30-year career has included acting, producing, directing in both film and television, said, "It is such an amazing feeling to be in a room that's filled with so much talent, strength and, above all, grace," adding, "I feel like I am just getting started."

Oprah, radiant in a figure-hugging cream dress, opened the show with a tribute to the late poet and human rights activist Maya Angelou and during the proceedings was seen mingling with John Legend, Common, DuVernay and happily posing for photos with other guests. The emotional event closed with a rousing performance by Common and Legend of their Oscar-nominated song "Glory" from "Selma," which left barely a dry eye in the house.

Others at the glamorous luncheon included Essence's editor-in-chief Vanessa K. Bush, Shonda Rhimes, Paula Patton, Iyala Vanzant, Angela Davis, Chanel Iman, Tika Sumpter, Tia Mowry-Hardrict, Holly Robinson Peete and Niecy Nash.
