Empire is one of those shows where, when characters say things like "Enough!" and "Sorry to interrupt!" They aren't sorry, and it's never enough. It's a show where a homeless drunkard and potential murder witness spouts portentious lines of Old Testament code, family infighting reaches UFC levels, and the petulant young prince of a hip-hop empire can taunt the President of the United States just to watch his personal brand's viral metrics soar into the stratosphere. Hakeem, the young rapper, can call Barack Obama a sellout. F it, that's good for business, and his father can call the Prez to apologize for his behavior. Sorry to interrupt, but nobody on this show does anything quietly.
At the center of this sprawling, fragile empire is Hakeem's father, Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard). He has the president's cell phone number, terrific taste in silk cravats, and an eye to take his company public. He's also got ALS, and it's prognosis negative. Which of his three sons will inherit the throne?
Enter Cookie Lyon (a brilliant Taraji P. Henson), Lucious' estranged, reformed jailbird wife, who never met a leopard skin cowboy hat she couldn't rock or a glass paneled room she didn't barge into and take over. "It was my $400,000 that started this bitch," she tells Lucious, fresh off ten years in the clink, "and I want half my company back." Cookie is Empire's drama crux, and Henson its messy, beautiful, furiously beating thematic heart.
Henson often abridges Cookie's brashness with bracing emotion. She took the fall for the former couple's sins all those years ago, and never saw her sons grow up. "Everything I did was for you and your brothers," she pleads with Hakeem, and there is tension and emotion in equal measure. But when he ain't feeling the grafted-on family dynamic, Cookie downshifts into Anger Town. "What I WANT is some RESPECT!" And she proceeds to beat her youngest son with a broom.
A few episodes into this world, it's clear Empire is happy to keep the gas pedal buried, ramping up the mirthful insanity. Lucious is beset on all sides by sycophants, detectives curious about the murder of a trusted henchman, and his own brazen arrogance. Cookie is navigating the legal shenanigans behind her early release, a torturous hate/love/hate cycle with the Lyon men, and a pitched battle with the Empire A&R exec who's also living with her ex-husband, a fight played out played out through a series of glorious put-downs, epic side eye, and spiritual gouges with platinum-tipped claws. This empire is riding hit records into an even bigger payday. But everyone wants to take a shot at the top spot.
Hakeem has a ton of talent, an even bigger ego, and a dangerous libido. His brother Jamal is a talented singer and arranger, but is excoriated at every turn by Lucious, who can't handle that he's gay. (In a powerful early flashback, Jamal is stuffed into a trash can by his angry and confused dad, only to be rescued by a distraught Cookie.) Meanwhie Andre, the oldest Lyon brother, is a smooth-talking MBA with the business acumen to guide the empire toward its IPO. He's also bipolar, married to a white woman, and potentially into wife-sanctioned philandering. Pile it on, Empire, just so long as you keep giving us the Cookie cookies. She'll throw her shoe at you. And maybe, on a quieter day, kick in your Bentley's quarter panel and then tell you to love it.
