TAMPA — The Yankees' fifth-starter derby is the Belmont Stakes, and a horse named Adam Warren is pulling away.
"There is a Secretariat in the field," general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday morning. "Right now, Warren's got a big lead in this, but we don't have to make that decision right now. As of right now, if we made the call today, it would be Warren."
The need for a fill-in fifth starter arose early in camp when lefty Chris Capuano — who was signed this offseason to a one-year, $5 million deal — went down with a quadriceps injury that will force the veteran to begin the season on the disabled list.
The 27-year-old Warren, who spent all of last season in the Yankees bullpen, was joined by Esmil Rogers (who was shelled in an exhibition start Tuesday night against the Tigers), Chase Whitley and Bryan Mitchell in the competition for the substitute fifth spot.
In four appearances this spring covering 13 innings, Warren has posted a 2.77 ERA, six strikeouts and zero walks. He is scheduled to pitch Thursday in Port Charlotte, Fla., against the Rays.
