New to stream on Amazon Prime is Alex Ross Perry's drama Listen Up Philip, starring Jason Schwartzman in the title role alongside Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss and Krysten Ritter. The tiny New York story from the indie up-and-coming director packs a giant punch of honesty and mixes the best elements from Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, and Noah Baumbach: existential monologues, documentary-like camera movements, and engrossing performances that keep you enthralled from start to finish and then some.
Listen Up Philip was arguably one of the most overlooked films of 2014. Though it was critically adored, its action-less plot and unconventionally unlikable characters failed to strike a commercial chord despite its respectable star power. Schwartzman plays Philip Lewis Friedman; an agitated, bitter New Yorker whose joy of publishing his second major novel is overshadowed by his skewed view of what it means to be a respected writer. Philip pushes those away who helped boost his career thus far — his disgruntled publisher and agent, his confused photographer girlfriend, and even New York City itself — in exchange for spending time with his idol and mentor, Ike Zimmerman (Jonathan Pryce), a successful author who preaches the benefits of writing at a country home rather than in the hustle and bustle of NYC. It's through Ike, his estranged daughter Melanie, and not having anywhere to flaunt his front that Philip begins to come to terms with his career and himself.
Perry's deeply nuanced script is brought perfectly to life through Schwartzman, who gives one of his best, and certainly his most raw, performances yet. Even though Philip is, at times, a brutally unlikable protagonist, you can't help but empathize with the passionate kid who loves books stuck inside him. Listen Up Philip is an ode to art, to literature, to New York, to Allen, and to our own inner demons that often hold us back. Despite its honestly, it gives us an optimistic outlook for the Philip within us all. Do yourself a solid this weekend and add this to your Amazon Prime Watchlist right now.
