The Giants are on the lookout for another pass-rusher, and they have reached out to inquire about Brandon Graham, a player they are very familiar with from his days as a member of the NFC East rival Eagles.
According to an NFL source, the Giants over the weekend expressed interest in Graham, and likely believe he is a better fit as a defensive end in their 4-3 defensive front than he was as a linebacker with the Eagles.
Graham was a disappointment in Philadelphia. In five years with the Eagles, Graham — a 2010 first-round pick (13th overall) out of Michigan — never broke into the starting lineup on a full-time basis. He has only 13 career NFL starts – only one in the past two seasons. But he is only 26 years old and is coming off a season with 5.5 sacks and four forced fumbles, playing less than half of the defensive snaps. Included was four tackles, one sack (of Ryan Nassib) and one forced fumble against the Giants last Oct. 12, a 27-0 Eagles victory at Lincoln Financial Field. He has 17 career sacks and nine forced fumbles.
At 6-foot-2 and 265 pounds, Graham could certainly play defensive end in a rotation for the Giants. According to reports, the Eagles are not going out of their way to prevent Graham from hitting the open market.
The Giants placed the franchise tag on Jason Pierre-Paul this offseason and parted ways with Mathias Kiwanuka. The upcoming NFL Draft is considered to be especially deep in pass rushers, but it will fill a need if the Giants can acquire one before then.
