Newly minted "Daily Show" host Trevor Noah is already facing his first scandal.
The South African comedian is drawing the ire of Twitter for messages he posted years ago — which are gaining attention with Monday's news that he will succeed Jon Stewart later this year — making jokes about Jews, Asians and women.
The offending tweets were first picked up by BuzzFeed business editor Tom Gara, and the Internet quickly responded, calling Noah anti-Semitic and sexist. Tuesday morning Noah (who has 2.1 million followers) tweeted a response "Twitter does not have enough characters to respond to all the characters on Twitter," which was quickly deleted, according to a screenshot.
Noah, 31, has appeared on "The Daily Show" only three times since joining the satirical news program last December. Born to a black mother and white father, much of his humor derives from growing up biracial in post-apartheid South Africa.
He is well-known in his native country and around the world (he is currently in Dubai for a stand-up comedy tour), but not in the US, where he has made a handful of appearances on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" and "Late Show With David Letterman."
A Comedy Central spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
