Maximilianstraße, Munich

This royal avenue was planned (and named for) Bavaria's King Maximilian II in 1850 — but I'm not sure even he could afford to shop at many of the street's high-end retailers: Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Hugo Boss, Gucci and Bulgari, to name a few. Just don't forget to stop over at the five-star Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten and the Museum für Völkerkunde (ethnology museum).

Rodeo Drive carries iconicism equivalent to LA's Hollywood sign, just at ground level. The luxury retail big boys are all here (Tiffany, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Valentino, Prada), but it's the Europe-esque, cobble-stoned area — with the Walk of Style, the Torso sculpture and other quirky bits — that make its palm-lined sidewalks and Ferrari-parked curbs a must-shop.

It might be blanketed in icy snow at any given moment, but the Big Apple's most famous shopping strip is never empty. Running the gamut from the old (Tiffany, Saks) to the new (Polo Ralph Lauren, Apple), the retail is as varied and vast as the city itself.
The best time of year to hit its wide sidewalks, not surprisingly, is Christmas, where each shop's windows morph into festive, sensory-overloading tableaux.

On any given day, the number of "pardon mes" uttered on this street is probably in the billions, this being Europe's most heavily trafficked luxury boulevard. It's also one of its most expensive.
Spanning from Piccadilly to Oxford Street, Bond has made cameos in everything from "Sense and Sensibility" to the Monopoly board. Expect to see all of the top-tier retail brands everywhere you look.

Like a deep-dish pizza, this Windy City strip is thickly packed with goodness: not just the stores and restaurants that make up the Magnificent Mile, but also cultural and historic landmarks like the Chicago Water Tower, the Art Institute of Chicago and Millennium Park. Too cold for you? Just stop by Neiman Marcus and buy a fleece.

When you take cars out of the picture, shopping becomes a lot more enjoyable. That's exactly what this Danish pedestrian retail area — Europe's longest — did, so you don't have to look both ways before crossing between Magasin du Nord and the original Royal Copenhagen porcelain shop.

If you're looking for brothels and weed dispensaries, you're on the wrong street. Hooftstraat instead skews more Cartier, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Hermès, Hugo Boss and Louis Vuitton in its tenantry.
This small (relative to this list, anyway) street also has great museums and some of the Netherlands' most expensive apartments.

Once upon a time, this 8-block district was a swamp — but the only crocodiles you'll find here now are on flipped-collar Lacoste shirts.
Fashion icons like Chanel, Dior, Gucci and Louis Vuitton meet tech icons like Apple and Sony, while adventurous shoppers try to out-strange one another with Japan's always-interesting take on fashion. Hit a coffeehouse when you need a breather.

Lining this street in what is arguably the world's most fashionable city, those aren't just the factory outlets of all those high-end Italian and non-paisan brands you know and love, they are the actual headquarters.
But really, it's history that makes this street great, it taking its name from Napoleon's Italian Republic (which Milan was the capital of). Don't miss a cup o' joe at Caffè Cova, one of the city's oldest cafes.
