Iran could surge toward bomb in 10th year of nuclear deal: France

Iran's nuclear deal allows it to ramp up production of nuclear material a decade from now, French diplomats warned Saturday.

A fact sheet issued by France's Foreign Ministry says Iran could carry out a "gradual, clearly defined increase of [enrichment] capacities between the 10th and 13th year of the accord it reached last week with the US and five other world powers," The Wall Street Journal reported.

Allowing Iran to increase its production of enriched nuclear material in the deal's 10th year would reduce the "breakout time" it would need to make bomb-grade nuclear material.

But how much the breakout time would be reduced was not clear.

Though Iran could increase its production capacity starting in the accord's 10th year, it would be barred from actually producing weapons-grade material until after the accord's 15th year.

Iran and six world powers reached agreement Thursday on the outlines of a landmark deal that would curb Iran's nuclear program.

Many of President Obama's Republican opponents in Congress have been skeptical of a deal with Iran and suggested the US may be giving too much away.

But Obama highlighted the rigorous inspections Tehran will be subject to.

If Iran cheats, the world will know it," he said. "So this deal is not based on trust . . . [but] unprecedented verification."
