Nuclear deal with Iran ‘endangers the world’: Netanyahu

WASHINGTON – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu went on the offense in US media Sunday, asserting the newly-minted Iran nuclear agreement is a "bad deal" that threatens his country's survival by leaving a vast nuclear infrastructure.

"I think for the preeminent terrorist state of our time to have a free path, an easy pass to nuclear weapons endangers Israel, endangers the region, endangers the world, it endangers everyone listening to me right now," Netanyahu said on ABC's "This Week."

Netanyahu said he's spoken to about 2/3 of the House and Senate to voice his concerns.

"I'm not trying to kill any deal. I'm trying to kill a bad deal," Netanyahu said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Congress returns from spring break in a week where the Senate is expected to take up legislation to mandate congressional review of any Iran deal, despite the White House's opposition. Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) stood by the decision, saying Congress should "absolutely" have a say in approval of a deal and lifting sanctions.

Corker says he has 64-65 votes toward the 67 needed for a veto-proof majority and he's lobbying Democrats over the weekend to consider it.

"Certainly the American people want to know that someone is teasing out all of the details, especially as they see Iran reporting one thing in their country and the US something else here," Corker said on Fox News Sunday.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., says she's a no vote on Corker's legislation because the White House has executive power to work out a deal.

Feinstein said the Iran framework is better that she had expected and it's likely the best possible to signal a "new day" with Iran. She warned Netanyahu's relentless opposition could "backfire on him."

"I wish that he would contain himself because he has put out no real alternative," Feinstein said on CNN's State of the Union.

Thursday's announcement with Iran was just a framework agreement, but final details are slated to be worked out before June 30.

The White House has argued that the alternative to no deal is war. But Netanyahu said there's still time for a better deal and he urged more sanctions so Iran can reconsider more concessions.

By lifting sanctions, Iran will "get billions of dollars into their coffers. They're not going to use it for schools or hospitals or roads," Netanyahu said. "They're going to use it to pump up their terror machine worldwide and their military machine that is busy conquering the Middle East now."
