The Giants, searching for their first victory, catch a break heading into their home-opener Sunday at MetLife Stadium against the Cardinals. The Giants will face a backup quarterback, as Drew Stanton will start in place of injured Carson Palmer.
Stanton, 30, previously had not thrown a pass in an NFL game since Dec. 19, 2010 when he was playing for the Lions.
Palmer started and was outstanding for the Cardinals in their season-opening 18-17 victory over the Chargers but he came out of that game with an issue with his right (throwing) shoulder. He did not practice much all week and Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said Palmer's inactivity was because of a "nerve thing'' in his shoulder. He was listed as questionable but was expected to play. Apparently the shoulder did not feel any better after the long flight and the decision was made to deactivate him.
Stanton, a career backup with the Lions, Colts and Cardinals is in his eighth NFL season out of Michigan State and had previously started four games – none since 2010. One of his starts came for the Lions and against the Giants on Oct. 17, 2010, a game won by the Giants 28-20. Stanton completed 19 of 34 passes for 222 yards with one touchdown and one interception. In his career, he has thrown five touchdown passes and nine interceptions.
This past preseason, Stanton played well, completing 71 percent of his passes along with three TDs and no interceptions. He is more mobile than Palmer but obviously far less experienced.
The Giants after going years struggling against backup quarterbacks were 4-1 against them last season. The only loss was to Nick Foles, who went on to become the starter with the Eagles.
