Detectives investigating a North Carolina truck heist that netted three armed crooks $4.8 million in gold bars last Sunday now suspect it was an inside job, according to warrants issued in the case.
A search warrant obtained by ABC states, "There is suspicion at this time that this could be an inside job due to the circumstances of the robbery," including inconsistencies in the guards' story.
The two security workers initially told cops that they'd pulled over along I-95 near Wilson, NC around 6:30 p.m. after experiencing mechanical problems with their truck, but later said a strong odor of gasoline from a recent pit stop made them feel ill, the network reported.

A mechanic found no issues with the truck, according to ABC.
As soon as they pulled onto the shoulder, three men in a white van pulled up behind them, whipped out guns, and identified themselves as police in Spanish while ordering the guards to the ground, CNN said.
The robbers bound the guards with zip ties and tape, then marched them a few feet into the woods, Sheriff Calvin Woodard Jr. said at a Wednesday press conference.
The search warrant says the trio tried to drive off in the truck, but couldn't get it started.
They then snapped a padlock on the trailer, hauled five 5-gallon buckets packed with 275 gold bars into their van, and sped off, ABC reported.
Another $5 million in silver was left untouched in the Massachusetts-bound truck, the network said.
The guards ran out of the woods and flagged down passing motorists who called the cops, according to the network.
"The fact that the truck was robbed immediately upon it pulling over at an unannounced stop is suspicious in and of itself," reads the warrant, obtained to search the truck and one of the guards' phone records. "It is also suspicious because there are no markings on the side of the truck that would indicate the type of cargo contained therein."
Despite releasing the warrants to the media, Woodard Jr. declined to identify the guards as suspects at the press briefing.
"Right now, [the guards] are still considered victims," Woodard said according to CNN. "But we're investigating every avenue."
Miami-based TransValue, which employees the guards, has posted a $50,000 reward for information in the case.
